Saturday Series: Spirit (Elemental #3) by Brigid Kemmerer

With power comes enemies. Lots of them.

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.

He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…

Review:
Hunter is on his own. After betraying Gabriel (which wasn't how it happened), being accused of hitting Calla (which totally didn't happen), getting constantly into arguments with his grandfather, Hunter realises he really is on his own and he can't trust anybody. Definitely not the new girl in school. Kate is fun, attractive and sparky, but he knows she is hiding something. He just hasn't figured out what yet.

After not killing Calla and her then issuing the threat of starting more fires until Hunter gets the Guides into town, he's been on edge. The always calm and collective teenager is on the break of exploding. Now since the Guides are apparently already in town and are once again after the Merricks, Hunter takes it upon himself to find out who Calla is working with and what her next move is going to be.

Ever since finding out it wasn't the Merricks whom killed his father and uncle, Hunter has been conflicted. He was trained by his father to become a Guide, but when it comes to it he can not pull the trigger. Hunter is constantly being pulled between what is right and wrong, being forced to take a side in the inevitable war that is coming. Once again this aides him in pushing everyone away from him, not being able to really trust anyone. This all creates a tragic aura around him, because you know it doesn't have to be that way.

Since Hunter's alliance is kind of wobbly, he somehow gets both sides to trust him. Now it is up to him to decide who he can trust and who he should help.

Spirit is actually very confusing to follow sometimes, because Hunter switches so often. Sometimes it even feels like he's not just sixteen, the hands he has been dealt in life were not very fortunate. You really feel for him and keep hoping he will find a way to trust people and find a family again.

There was one thing which I absolutely don't agree with, unfortunately I can not tell what it is. When I read it I kept thinking this isn't real, it's going to be okay and I kept waiting for things to change, but they didn't. I was so mad for that! Hunter has been through so much already in his life and now you've added this to it. No wonder that boy is breaking apart.

Once again a very interesting read, that takes your emotions on a roller-coaster-ride which has at least eight loops, so you no longer know which way is up or down. It really made my heard bleed for this boy. You just want to hug him and tell him it is all going to be alright, that he is not alone. I really feel like he deserves another book or at least novella. His story is definitely not done yet.
