Review: Illusion (Chronicles of Nick #5) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Be careful what you wish for…

You just might get it.

Nick Gautier is tired of his destiny. He doesn’t want to be the son of a demon who’s fated to end the world. Nor does he want to see another demon or other preternatural creature who wants to kill or enslave him. He just wants to be normal and have normal problems like everyone else.

But normality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. When he gets sucked into an alternate reality where his mother has married his mentor and his Atlantean god best friend has become a human geek, he begins to understand that no life is free of pain, and that every person has a specific place in the universe… Even the son of a hated demon.

Most of all, he sees that his powers aren’t the curse he thought they were, and that the world needs a champion, especially one its enemies can’t imagine rising up to defend the ones he should destroy.

Old enemies and new friends square off for a major battle that will either restore Nick to his real world, or end him forever.

Even being stuck in alternate reality doesn't really seem to faze Nick. Though he wouldn't mind going back. Unfortunately it seems that his powers have left him, his friends here aren't supernatural and mostly, he has shrunk a foot. As in, he is now short! Not knowing what to do now, Nick tries to look for some allies. But in this alternate world, it seems some alliances have been shifted.

Meanwhile back in his own reality, Nick's friend are stuck with some cry baby. Quick realising something has happened to their Nick, Kody sets out to save her boyfriend. Even if that means travelling between realities. When she finds out who is behind all this, well let's just say hell is about to break out and Simi is bringer her bbq sauce.

Once again people/demons/everyone is out to kill Nick. In the past he shied away from using his powers, but now when he needs them the most, it seems they are failing him. Nick will need to accept his true nature to get out of this one though.

Also we find some things out about Kody that really had me giddy and fascinated. This will mostly be the case for fans of the Dark-Hunter series, others might not get the references.

Can I say that Nick brings home the strangest strays. He's all about giving people a second chance and so he ends up with demons, hellhounds and deities as friends. I can not seem to recall him having any real human friends. Bubba and Mark don't count, they are worse than some supernaturals.

Overall Illusion was another great story. The humour was spot on, a great balance between action and storytelling, very fast paced and with a good flow. I'm curious what Sherrilyn has in store for Nick next.
