Saturday Series: City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1) by Cassandra Clare

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

Seeing someone get killed by a blond, blue eyed boy, that only you can see, is a 'great' introduction in the Shadowhunters' world. After that night things only get weirder for Clary. Suddenly demons show trying to kill her and her mom gets abducted. Luckily Jace is here to help her out. Not that he is her knight in shiny armour, rather think leather, marks all over his body and a bad attitude. He is just intrigued by the demon attention Clary is getting.

Together with their friends, they sat out to uncover what is going on and to find Clary's mom. It seems her mother though has been keeping a lot of secrets, now leaving Clary practically blind in this new uncovered world. Before you know it, it's demons all around, fighting an uncovering more and more secrets.

As they fight together, Jace and Clary grow closer. It almost seems as if they are drawn together. Clary can not help but being fascinated by this angel looking boy. Don't get me wrong, I can see the appeal of Jace. It's not just his looks. Yeah, he has a big chip on his shoulder and he is so arrogant in his self confidence. I'm mostly digging the 'don't mess with me'-vibe he sends out and there is this cloud of mystery around him you can not help but want to unravel. Clare really has no chance trying to stop the attraction, nor would she want to.

Luckily the feelings are somewhat mutual. Still when one particular secret comes out, their world will collapse. It will have them question everything they thought to be true in their life.

The story is mostly told from Clary's POV and once in a while switches over to Simon or Jace. Those switches were really interesting as we get more insight in Jace and to see how Simon, Clary's best human friend, deals with being thrust into this world.

Overall the book was fantastic. All the characters, even the bad guys, are so easy to relate to and connect with. There is this paranormal setting, but also deals with some real issues about family, first love and self discovery. Don't get me wrong the action is all very fun and the amount of sarcasm in this, I was loving it. But it's those real issues that take the story to the next level.

Cassandra Clare has created this fascinating world, with so many details that it becomes believable. She has done a superb job. I honestly don't have that many questions about the whole Shadowhunter world, she explained it all really well. The twists she has put in this story, I did not see them coming and mostly that last one will leave you with the feeling of WTH. A real page turner, that you will not be able to put down for even a second.
