Review: Desert Heat by Elizabeth Reyes

Besides working three jobs, worrying about her family back home, and running from her past, the worst thing to complicate Bethany Amaya’s life further would be a romance. But after a second-run in with the irresistibly sexy detective Damian Santiago, that’s exactly what she gets. In the blink of an eye, she’s caught up in a passionate romance with one of the most intense men she’s ever met.

Awestruck for a second time by the beautiful and intriguing performer, Damian is both surprised and delighted that Bethany agrees to something he didn't even expect to be asking for so soon—exclusivity. As things heat up, Damian’s skills of detecting and reading body language begin to raise suspicions—Bethany is keeping something from him. Try as he might to calm his suspicions, the blatant signs become impossible to ignore.

Some things are better left unsaid. At least that’s what Bethany keeps telling herself. She never imagined falling in love so quickly, and she refuses to get Damian caught up in her troubles. She knows what he suspects—sees it in those possessive eyes. With Damian’s suspicions mounting, time is of the essence. The race is on, and Bethany finds herself scrambling to fix the past before the truth comes out and Damian finds out that it’s much worse than he suspected.

Elizabeth Reyes is pretty much my go to author for high emotional, very sexy reads with a dash of humor. So far she has not disappointed me and I can not recommend her enough. With Desert Heat she takes us away from California to Las Vegas. There is a reason why they call this sin city. This story will seduce you, wring you out and still leave you smiling.

Damien Santiago is the youngest detective at LVPD and the reason he got there so fast is, because he worked for it. This ladies and gentlemen is a classic case of a workaholic. He pretty much has no social life, except meeting up with some casual lady friends and he only hangs out with buddies from work. The guy needs either a new hobby or a plot twist in his life. This is how Damien gets roped into a speed dating session by his friend Jerry. Having no real interest in the event, one girl in particular draws his attention though. After behaving like an arrogant know it all, he isn't even able to get her name.

Though it seems no matter how hard they try, they keep thinking about the other and they are definitely both intruiged by the attraction between them. It's not just that, Damien has never felt this pull towards someone, not to this extent. After their paths cross a couple of more times, one thing leads to another and things turn hot and heavy, pretty quickly.

Bethany though seems to be hiding something from Damien. Hiding something from a detective is not the smartest idea and Bethany actually isn't a very good liar. All throughout the story you're kept guessing. I honestly had no idea and usually I figure it out pretty quickly. This took me by surprise though. It's only a matter of time before Bethany has to share her secrets, but is the love between them strong enough to survive those revelations?

I loved all the characters in the book. Seriously Ms. Reyes is so good at writing those family dynamics with real drama, interaction and the love these characters have for each other just come right out of the pages. That Santiago family is brilliant. They are all so different and fascinating. Bethany as a character threw me by surprise a couple of times. She has so many layers and dimensions, it took me a while to figure her out and with every page you find out something new about her. At first sight Damien is a classic cop, but underneath he has a heart of gold that will make you swoon.

I'm giving Desert Heat 4.5 stars, because I completely loved it even if Damien is still a bit too soft for me. I like my guys a bit rougher. Though even better, Damien isn't an only child. You know this means there will be more than one book and I already can not wait to get my hands those smexy brothers of him.

If you're a fan of Elizabeth Reyes, you've probably already read this book. If this is the first time you heard of her, I am telling you to give her a chance. You will not be disappointed and then you can join us Desert Rats.

4.5
