Review: The Prophecy of Arcadia (Arcadian Wars #1) by M.H. Soars

Being a teenager is tough, especially when you have to pretend to be something you’re not, and you’re in love with someone you shouldn’t. 115 years ago, a small planet called Arcadia was invaded by a vicious alien race and nearly destroyed. Cut off from their resources, the Arcadians turned to Earth for help. A group of Arcadian explorers discovered a Prophecy that claimed their salvation lay in the hands of two children from Earth. To ensure their safety, the Arcadian Council sent their most gifted youngsters to Earth to act as protectors. Samantha is one of them.

To succeed in her mission she must learn to control her Arcadian powers and keep her true identity from her best friend, and the girl she swore to protect, Alexia. But Samantha will soon realize that nothing is as it seems. Someone is trying to prevent the Prophecy from taking place and the prophecy boy hasn't been found yet. There is also a new drug circulating at school that is turning students into freakishly strong menaces.

To make matters worse, distractions keep getting in her way. Such as her love/hate relationship with her “cousin” Matthew. Or her confused feelings toward popular and mysterious Julian. She wants nothing more than to be free to live her life. But the survival of Arcadia depends on her and her friends. Free will is not an option.

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

It all starts with a prophecy from a 115 years ago, when Arcadia was being invaded and all hope was pretty much lost. There is only one way to save the planet and the people responsible for that will be born on Earth. So Arcadia will sent their best to protect those saviors.

Fast forward a good century and we meet Sam, Matthew and Alexia. The story is told from their POV's. It was very interesting to read the events in the story through three different pair of eyes. Sam and Matthew are both alien and Alexia is human. Alexia doesn't know anything about the prophecy, so she is kept in the dark for the most part. This definitely adds a big contrast, because Sam and Matthew do know what is going on.

There were a lot of characters, but I was able to keep track of all of them. They were all very likeable, though I have my suspicions on some of them. Now it's not just Matthew and Sam who have to protect Alexia, there are four other kids and a couple of adults responsible for making sure the prophecy becomes fulfilled. We already know a lot about most of the characters, still there are some who I would like to get to know even better.

Since it's the first book in a trilogy, it's mostly the buildup of the world and plotline. The focus is mainly on the characters and their (possible) relationships. Alexia is all gaga about her soulmate, though if he really is her soulmate isn't quite sure, because there are some other candidates for that role. Meanwhile Sam and Matthew have this hot and heavy thing going on, which nobody is allowed to know, because they have to pretend to be cousins. So we get to see all this romance and forbidden love from different angles, which really just made it more interesting than seeing it from one person's pov. Though we do get to see more of Matthew and Sam's relationship than from Alexia's and her soul mate. Which made it harder for me to understand that epic love.

I very easily got swept into the story and certainly will be reading the second novel. There were a couple of secondary characters that really piqued my interest and I want to know more about them. Besides the love part of the story, there is also a slight drug problem going on at the school, which in this novel was the side plot, but I have a feeling we'll be going into that deeper in the second novel.

There isn't that much action throughout the story and the threat was very vague. Getting to know the characters was interesting, but not enough. I will need more things to happen in the second novel to keep my interest and not just romantic troubles. The story can definitely go anyway and I'm curious to what the author has in store for us next.

3.5*

The Author
I like to call myself a United Nations child. I was born in the United States but grew up in several different countries which gave me a broader perspective of life. I've always been passionate about books and stories and at a certain point had a comic book series going. With a background in fashion design I always thought I was going to follow that path. But the characters in my head kept begging to be set free. So I decided to write their stories.

A couple of years and a baby later, the first installment of my Arcadian Wars series is finally done. I currently reside in New Mexico with my husband and baby daughter. I love to read novels in the YA, PNR, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, and Chick Lit genres. When not devouring said novels, you may find me shopping online (I'm an expert), blogging about fashion, or trying to teach my daughter to walk (even though she's too young for that).
