Review: Rules of Survival by Jus Accardo

If you want to survive, you have to follow the rules…

Mikayla Morgan is wanted for her mother's murder. She's been on the run for almost a year now, avoiding not only the police but the real killer. Tired of running and desperate to clear her name, she breaks one of the most sacred rules: never return to the scene of the crime.

Every bounty hunter on the Eastern Seaboard is after the Morgan girl—but Shaun Denver and his partner snagged her. She's a piece of work, and Shaun can't decide if he wants to kiss her or kill her. When things take a sharp turn south, Shaun does the only thing he can think of to keep her close—he handcuffs them together.

As the danger mounts and the killer closes in, the chemistry between them threatens to explode. Shaun and Kayla will need to break all the rules if they hope to get out of this alive.

I am not sure how to feel about this book. The whole setup was okay, being cuffed together, but it isn't the first time I've read a story that started of that way. For most part of the book, the focus was on trying to find out who was the real killer rather than trying to get those handcuffs off. Seeing the way Mikayla grew up and Shaun is a bounty hunter, you'd think they would have learned how to pick locks.

If you can see past that bit of weirdness than it is a good story, though it could have been better. Let's start with Makayla. She is now eighteen years old and her mom got murdered last year. Since her prints were all over the scene the authorities and apparently bounty hunters have been after her. Now being on the run is actually not something new for Mikayla, she and her mom have been on the run her entire life. Don't ask me how they did this and Mikayla still ended up pretty normal. I feel like this story would have worked better and had been a bit more believable if she had been a couple of years older.

Shaun is also young, only twenty and a bounty hunter, though it quickly becomes clear he should have chosen a different profession. He's had a terrible childhood, which he shares with Makayla, who as far he knows killed her own mother. I think he trusts her way too fast, way too early into the story. Pretty much from the moment they are bound together, secrets start spilling out from both of them.

There is some mystery and action in it, but it's almost a backstory for this growing romance between Shaun and Mikayla. Is this story believable? No. Is it enjoyable? Yes. As long as you don't think too hard about certain things, it is definitely possible to enjoy it.
