When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.
Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.
They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.
Reading this synopsis you would think Ugly Love is like a lot of love stories out their. Two people start a friends with benefits thing, they don't want a relationship and before you know it feelings develop and it's only a matter of time before we get our happily ever after. While this is partially true for Tate and Miles, I would say it only takes up thirty, forty percent max of what is going on here.
Now I don't want to say too much, because there is so much more hiding behind that synopsis, but I do want to mention you don't get just one love story, you actually get two. Which took me by surprise, though you very soon figure out why Colleen Hoover would do such a thing. So from the beginning you can kind of figure out where this is going, still the emotional turmoil kept me on the edge. It's watching a trainwreck happen and not being able to look away. It started so beautifully and ended indeed ugly.
When Tate made her deal with Miles, she already knew she wouldn't be able to keep to his rules. That much is clear, though she hides it very well from him. It doesn't help of course that Miles is really great and Tate has no clue why he shouldn't be boyfriend material. He keeps repeating over and over again how he can not give her a future, that love is not possible for him. Tate knows there is more behind those rules, but she can not ask him about it and Tata would never tell. She just has to accept whatever he can give her. This is of course totally unfair, but often things in life are.
I've read a lot of stories where a guy refuses to give into love, because of certain reasons, which often involve his past. With those guys I often have the feeling of wanting to smack some sense in them when they have this incredible woman in front of them giving him all her love. While there were certain some moments where I was angry at Miles for the way he behaved towards Tate, it was impossible to completely hate him for it. Slowly we get to figure out what has happened and what is keeping him from giving in. This part really broke my heart and brought out all these deep emotions. I might have even shed a tear or two. At the end it certainly all makes sense and definitely helped me understand where Miles was coming from. It's actually pretty amazing he was still able to feel this much for Tate.
Ugly Love is beautifully written. I don't know how Colleen Hoover comes up with these kind of things, but she can take a simple storyline to whole other level. No fluffy reads here, but books about real emotions, real people and real love.
