Review: Hidden (Hiding from Love #1) by Selena Laurence

Nick Carlisle comes to Hawaii to hide—from what happened during his service in Afghanistan, from relationships, from his future. Lyndsey Anderson came to Hawaii to hide too—from the man who abused her, from the sacrifices she made, from her dark past.

But when Nick meets Lyndsey, Hawaii gets a whole lot hotter, and they find they can’t hide their hearts. As Nick fights to come to terms with what he’s done, Lyndsey struggles to forgive herself for the choices she’s made. But when the dangerous past threatens the beautiful present, can they survive to learn how to love? And who will finally reveal what’s hidden?

Both Nick and Lyndsey moved to Hawaii to escape. Nick from what happened in Afghanistan and Lyndsey from an abusive ex-boyfriend. Slowly they are getting their lives back in order, but love seems to be the furthest thing from their mind. While Nick just doesn't feel ready, afraid of what the consequences might be, Lyndsey feels she's not worthy of love.

The first time Nick sees her, he knows there is something special about her and he just can not get her out of his mind. Asking her out though, isn't an easy feat. How many times does a guy need to be rejected before he gets the message? Nick isn't ready to give up on her, when he shows Lyndsey that he's serious about her, things finally start moving forward.

Lyndsey can not deny that she's attracted to Nick, but that is about as far as she is willing to go. She is not afraid of him hurting her, but she has made some choices which left her feeling unworthy of love. Though through time denying what is going on between them becomes harder and slowly she starts letting Nick in.

This are two people, who need to learn to let go of the past and forgive themselves, before they can truly give this love between them an honest chance. The road definitely isn't easy and I really felt for them. We get to see things from two perspectives and it was interesting to get to know these characters.

Their hearts are meant for giving and loving, which is obvious to see for everyone, they just need to figure it out first. It wasn't all very clear cut, but I loved how naturally everything developed between them and on a personal level.

Nick and Lyndsey are great characters. While both of them are struggling with some past issues, they certainly have very different personalities. He's not one to risk it easily, but once he made a decision, he goes for it and gives it his all. Which in this case means his heart and you just hope that she is careful with this precious gift. Lyndsey is shaped by her history and wants to use her own experiences to help other people. They were so easy to relate to and such down to earth people, making me wish they could be real life friends.

The setting of this book is heavenly. Reading about Hawaii almost made me forget about the bad weather here and I was completely swept up in it. It certainly is a perfect summer read.

Extra: You don't need to read Camouflaged before reading Hidden.

The Author
Selena Laurence lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and spends a hell of a lot of time at soccer games, on her laptop, and reading. She requires a Mocha Latte every day to function, keeps a goldendoodle at her feet most of the time, and has more kids than she knows what to do with. Her husband, Mr. Laurence, spends as much time as he can at the office and the gym in order to avoid the kids, the dog, the laptop and the reading, but he always shows up for the soccer games, and he makes a mean Mocha Latte.
