Review: Path of Destruction (Broken Heartland #2) by E. Lee & Caisey Quinn

They ignored the warning signs and it cost them everything...

At the end of a life-changing summer a devastating tornado hit the small town of Hope’s Grove, Oklahoma.

While the brick suburban mansions of Summit Bluffs saw very little damage, their occupants weren’t so lucky. As the members of both communities struggle to put the pieces of their lives back together, lies will be told, truths will be revealed, and nothing will ever be the same. The road to recovery is long and paved with past hurts and future heartbreaks.

They ignored the warning signs, and one of them didn’t make it out alive. The four that remain know they’d be crazy to think the storms are actually over..

Because it’s just when you think you’re safe that you find yourself right in the path of destruction.

Path Of Destruction picks up right after Storm Warning and these books can not be read separately. I absolutely loved the first story, and was very anxious about the sequel. It ended with a cliffhanger that had me screaming for more and after a long wait here it was.

We got to know the five main characters pretty well, and while it said it in the synopsis that one might not make it out alive, it still took me by surprise. The story continues and after the storm has settled down, only then the destruction has become clear. It seems that every one in town lost someone, people got hurt and devastation is all around.

Our main characters are now left to pick up the pieces of their lives as best as they can. Some are succeeding better at this, relying on each other to help them make it through. While others are slowly going over the deep end. This story doesn't have a lot of happy moments in it and is very much focused on the way people grief.

It was once again very well written. Though with the often switching of point of views between the characters I did have the feeling some parts of the story stayed more superficial. This made that we got less of a grasp on how serious certain events or behaviour is or maybe it can be because it now takes time over nine months instead of only three. Also some of the main characters got a bit on my nerves towards the end. I know that everyone deals with grief in a different way, but it's difficult to read how some characters become weaker through this instead of a stronger.

Once again we're left hanging. It's not such a big cliffhanger as before, but just enough to leave you wondering as to what is going to happen next.

3.5

The Authors
Whether you believe in destiny, divine intervention, or just plain ol' dumb luck, several things happened in 2013 that caused E. Lee and C. Quinn's paths to cross. It may have been that the stars aligned perfectly, or the fact anytime Luke Bryan was mentioned on a social media site both of them were tagged, or maybe it was just that their small town roots and country girl attitudes were magnetically drawn together—calling out to one another, “Y'all should write a book!” Despite geography keeping them apart—Lee in Illinois and Quinn in Alabama—they did. Thanks to three-hour phone calls, ridiculous amounts of online chats, and umpteen Google Docs—Storm Warning is the first book in their edgy new Young Adult series, Broken Heartland.
